Ford Celebrates 100 Years in Australia, Reveals Ranger Super Duty, and Partners with the Australian Red Cross

MELBOURNE, Australia, April 4, 2025 – Ford Motor Company proudly celebrated its 100th anniversary in Australia today, marking continued commitment to innovation, investment, employees, and community support that has seen the company becoming – and remaining – the largest automotive employer in the country.

Ford also looked to the future with the global reveal of the all-new Ranger Super Duty, and announced an AUD$ 1.5-million, three-year partnership between Ford Philanthropy and the Australian Red Cross. The company also celebrated the extension of its 100-year partnership with the Geelong Football Club, the world’s longest-running partnership in professional sport.

“For 100 years, Ford and Australia have grown together. Australia was one of the first markets we established outside North America. It was a key moment in making Ford truly global. It has been a center of innovation, from the first truck or Ute, to the Falcon and Ranger, and always a pipeline of talent,” said Bill Ford, Executive Chair. “Ford Australia may be 100 years old, but the road ahead is what excites me the most. Built on ingenuity, determination, and world-class innovation, the team in Australia is not just shaping the future, they are redefining what is possible.”

    Ranger Super Duty Revealed

Designed and developed in Australia, Ranger Super Duty made its global debut at Ford’s centenary celebrations, marking the first time Ford’s “Super Duty” name has been applied to any vehicle outside of North America. Born from hundreds of hours of conversations and time spent with customers, Ranger Super Duty delivers a heavy-duty, heavy-hauling work vehicle to meet the needs of the most demanding customers in the most demanding environments. Ranger Super Duty’s work strengths also make it an ideal recreational vehicle capable of going a long way beyond the bitumen.

“We listened to what the hardest working fleet operators told us they needed to be more productive, and we’ve developed a Ranger with heavy-duty hardware and enhanced capability to stay on the job longer and help get it done sooner,” said Jim Baumbick, vice president, advanced product development, cycle planning and programs, Ford Motor Company. “We are taking global midsize truck capability to a whole new level, straight from the factory.”

Listening to customers and creating vehicles that meet their needs traces all the way back to the 1930s, when an Aussie farmer sent a letter asking Ford to build a vehicle that could go to church on Sunday and take the pigs to market on Monday. The coupe-ute, was invented, demonstrating Aussie ingenuity and practicality, said Baumbick. “There really is a direct link between the market desire for a vehicle like the Ranger Super Duty and the 1934 Lew Bandt ute.

“Customers told us they wanted something comfortable and safe, that could carry and tow more and go further off-road. And just look at it. It looks like it means business,” said Baumbick.

With a thicker, stronger chassis, front and rear locking differentials, heavy-duty axles, and stronger suspension, this truck is heavy-duty commercial grade but consumer friendly. Redefining the heavy-duty, medium pickup segment, Ranger Super Duty will deliver, versatility, connectivity, and creature comforts unseen before with this level of capability.

While Ranger Super Duty was born in Australia, it will be going around the world. Built at Ford’s Automotive Alliance Thailand (AAT) facility, Ranger Super Duty will go on sale in 2026 across Australia and New Zealand and Thailand. It will also be offered in other markets through Ford Global Fleet Sales, who can also provide modification services. The product line-up and specs for these markets will be confirmed closer to the introduction.

“Ford Global Fleet Sales is proud to partner with Ford to distribute the all-new Ranger Super Duty to markets worldwide.  We believe Ranger Super Duty fills a gap for our customers seeking a vehicle with more payload and towing capacity while continuing to deliver Ranger off-road capabilities,” said Chris Manley, CEO, Ford Global Fleet Sales.

Backed by the Ford Pro Convertor ecosystem

Recognising the critical role of customisation for heavy-duty trucks, Ford also announced that the Ford Pro Convertor program will launch in Australia in the second half of 2025.

Connecting customers with trusted, Ford-certified conversion specialists across the country, Ford ProTM Convertor delivers high-quality vehicle conversions to meet a wide range of customer requirements, all backed by the comfort and peace of mind of a full five-year warranty
from the Ford ProTM Convertor, complemented by Ford’s five-year unlimited kilometre warranty on the base vehicle.

All Ford Pro™ Convertors undergo a comprehensive assessment by Ford to ensure the quality of their production and installation methods align with our quality standards.

“Connecting customers through our dealer network with a wide range of Ford Pro Convertors will give them peace of mind that their new Ford will be ready to meet their unique needs from day one – from offering specialised trays and secure storage to full conversions that’ll help fire crews, emergency services and other essential providers,” said Andrew Birkic, president and CEO, Ford Australia and New Zealand.

“Every business is different, but they all require their vehicles to be tailored to their unique needs, with the quality, professionalism, and peace of mind that allows them to get on with the job – knowing they’ve been able to customise their truck to their needs.”

“Ranger Super Duty is a heavy-duty vehicle designed to work hard in remote locations. That’s also why, in partnership with our dealers, over the next year we’re looking to expand our service points and build a presence in new locations, supporting key industries and ensuring our customers have the support they need, wherever they are. We’re building an entire eco-system of support to ensure those who do the tough jobs will be able to do them a little easier,” he said.

    Australian Red Cross partnership

Australian Red Cross and Ford Philanthropy have launched a new three-year, AU$1.5million partnership, to support Australian communities and strengthen local, community-led efforts to build resilience and recover from disasters.

Australian Red Cross CEO Andrew Colvin, said the partnership between Australian Red Cross and Ford Philanthropy is a powerful demonstration of how we can work together to support communities before, during, and after disasters.

“With Ford’s generous commitment, we can expand our reach, ensuring more people have the tools and resources to prepare for and recover from crises. By combining our expertise with Ford’s dedication to community support, we can ensure no-one is left behind in times of need,” Mr Colvin said.

The relationship between Ford and Red Cross goes back to the early days of the Ford Motor Company, when Henry Ford supplied converted Model Ts to serve as battlefield ambulances during World War One. And for the last 75 years, Ford Motor Company has been a proud partner of the Red Cross, assisting with disaster relief, health and safety training and education, international, and lifesaving blood services.

Ford Philanthropy President, Mary Culler, said Ford has a global commitment to being there in times of crisis.

“The work Australian Red Cross does in helping to support communities to respond and recover from disasters and climate related emergencies aligns with our global vision,” Ms Culler said. Here in Australia, Ford Philanthropy will support Australian Red Cross in its work around community resilience and disaster preparedness and recovery.

“We are establishing a transformative and scalable collaboration, supporting Australian Red Cross to respond effectively during crises, while working towards strengthening community resilience,” Ms Culler said.

Ford’s three-year $1.5 million funding from Ford Philanthropy through international grantmaking partner GlobalGiving, includes:

    • Philanthropic investment in year-round disaster response, recovery and preparedness.
    • Community Resilience Programs: Delivering disaster preparedness information and tools to communities in East Gippsland Shire area who are at high risk of natural disasters and a bespoke 12-month program in the City of Greater Geelong.
    • A loan fleet of seven Ford vehicles spread across each state and the Northern Territory, to enable Australian Red Cross to engage in humanitarian work to support communities across the country.
    • Extensive participation opportunities for dealers and staff, from community fundraising, to volunteering, Lifeblood Drives, and more.

Ford and Geelong Football Club Celebrate 100 Years

Today, Ford and the Geelong Football Club are celebrating 100 years of partnership– a relationship that began in Ford’s first year of operation in Australia and is the world’s longestrunning partnership in professional sport.

The partnership includes support for both the men’s and women’s teams, as well as off-field collaboration through a range of community programs.

“More than just a logo on a jersey, our relationship with the Geelong Football Club is a genuine friendship,” said Birkic.

“In the early days, many of our employees worked on the line during the week and took to the field for the Cats on the weekend. We’ve been with Geelong through good times and bad, because that’s what friends do. And while we’re immensely proud of our century-long relationship, we’re incredibly excited for what’s next.”

Steve Hocking, CEO of Geelong Football Club added: “Together over the course of a century, the Geelong Football Club and Ford Motor Company have shared people and place, ideas and aspirations, 10 premierships and countless more achievements,” Hocking said.

“We are united by a fundamental passion for high performance and a relentless pursuit of progress. While we have 100 years of history at our back, it’s the next evolutions of our organisations and our partnership that excite us more than anything else.

Bringing Ford’s archives to life through the Ford Heritage Vault

This week Ford also published a deep dive into its history in Australia through the Ford Heritage Vault, an online repository for all things related to Ford history and heritage around the world. With the new additions, it is now home to more than 2,500 brochures and images of Ford models sold in Australia from 1925.

The Vault currently contains more than 16,000 digital items, including product brochures, assorted regional issues of the Ford Times magazine, product and concept photography, images of global Ford facilities, and press releases detailing the innovations in historic concept vehicles.

The best of Ford’s automotive history in Australia is now just a click away with visitors able to view unique vehicles, like the 1934 Coupe-Utility, 1960 XK Falcon, and the brightly colored XR6 and XR8 of the 2000s..

Ford’s US-based archives team, led by Ford Heritage brand manager, Ted Ryan, and senior collections archivist, Ciera Casteel, have been working with local vendors to digitise thousands of images, brochures, documents, and audiovisual materials to preserve and make this history available to the public.

“It has been a mammoth undertaking, and we’re continuing to add to the online archive with Australian-relevant documents, brochures and images,” Ryan said. “We want to ensure the collection is made accessible online for the general public, so everyone can re-live their favourite moments.”

Ford Australia is Australia’s largest automotive employer, with a dedicated team of more than 1500, and dealers operating from more than 240 sites nationwide. The company supports several philanthropic causes and is a proud sponsor of numerous sporting organisations, from Supercars teams to Basketball Australia, Queensland Rugby League, and Golf NSW, in addition to its record-setting 100 years as sponsor of the Geelong Football Club.

“Fleet managers told us about the heavy-duty medium pick-up space and how there just wasn’t anything they wanted,” said Willing. “This set our team on a path to digging deeper, meeting with more than 50 companies and public services to truly live the life of these customers to understand their specific needs.”

The result was an idea for a truck that could bridge the gap between what was currently available and what the industry told us it needed. “As we collaborated on this idea more, we realised we wanted to deliver a truck that was the epitome of Built Ford Tough and that the way it looked had to match that functionality.”

According to Willing, the team took the already bold-looking Ranger and leaned into it, making it look even tougher. “All the design elements have purpose,” Willing said. “We wanted to achieve a feeling, that from just one glance, Ranger Super Duty means business.”

    Tough truck, tough looks

Featuring 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain light truck tyres, wider track width, and increased ground clearance, Ranger Super Duty commands attention, and has “plenty of presence,” said Max Wolff, head of design, Ford International Markets Group.

The unique bonnet design with its chamfered edges suggest strength while the leading edge of the bonnet has been stamped with ‘SUPER DUTY’, while the new open-weave mesh grille ensures optimum air flow.

At the front of the truck is a heavy-duty, frame-mounted steel bumper which provides enhanced protection to the radiator and headlights in off-road situations. Attachment points for mounting driving lights are standard while the front bash plate wraps down from the bumper, offering impressive, increased approach, rampover and departure angles.

“The design brief to the team for Ranger Super Duty was ‘Ultimate Tough’,” said Wolff. “The pumped guards, for instance, which were necessary to accommodate the track increase and larger tyre size and the squared-off, over-fender design both unique to Ranger Super Duty.”

Available as a Single Cab Chassis, Super and Double Cab Chassis and the Double Cab pick-up. “From working on the farm or building site, to emergency services or forestry needs, and touring four-wheel drivers, there’s a range of Ranger Super Duty variants to suit customer needs,” said Wolff.

Like Ranger, which is designed to be upfitter ready, Ranger Super Duty takes that to the next level. “We made sure that the truck is ready for everything from service bodies to slip-ons, to ensure that whatever you need your Ranger Super Duty to do, getting it outfitted is a simple process.” said Wolff.

Functional and ready for work inside

Echoing the stamped SUPER DUTY name on the bonnet, the brand is also embossed into the upper glovebox door on the inside of the truck. Standard on all variants is a 12-inch infotainment screen with auxiliary switches located in the overhead console.

As a work-oriented vehicle, Ford’s design team wanted to ensure the truck is a partner that makes work easier. For those customers that need to use a larger screen or device in the cabin, an optional Integrated Device Mounting system can be installed on the passenger side of the vehicle for mounting devices up to 4 kilograms.

“The available Integrated Device Mounting system was designed to clear the passenger airbag zone and prevent owners from having to damage their vehicle by making modifications,” said Wolff. “Because it’s mounted directly to the vehicle, device vibration is reduced making it easier to view and use devices.”

A joint project between Ford Design and Safari, Ranger Super Duty’s snorkel is unique to the truck and designed to complement the muscular lines of the front fender. The sealed installation helps raise the air intake height to roof level, providing cooler and cleaner air to the engine.

    Improved vision

Look at Ranger Super Duty and you’ll no doubt spot the taller mirrors, a requirement as this truck offers a GVM of 4500 kilograms. Taller wing mirrors are essential if the internal rear-view mirror is obscured.

These taller mirrors were subjected to a barrage of tests, including Ford’s dreaded door slam test which simulates 10 years of wear and tear. Ranger Super Duty’s front doors were slammed tens of thousands of times in temperatures ranging from freezing cold to scorching hot, ensuring the performance of the mirrors and the vehicle’s hinges weren’t compromised.

“As a work vehicle, we know that Ranger Super Duty won’t always be treated with care so we make sure we slam the doors hard over and over again to ensure it will stand up to years of use,” said Dave Burn, chief program engineer, Ranger Super Duty, Ford Australia. “It’s all part of our commitment to the Built Ford Tough ethos.”

    Driver assistance

Ranger Super Duty has been developed with upfitting in mind. The reinforced frame and readily accessible mounting points make it easy to integrate a variety of aftermarket accessories and specialised equipment. This versatility means that Ranger Super Duty arrives ready to work from the factory.

“These enhancements are key to Ranger Super Duty being able to carry and tow bigger loads than any other factory-built mid-size pickup,” said Burn. “These larger, stronger components improve vehicle durability and reliability which is something we know our customers will appreciate.”Ranger Super Duty gets front and rear parking aids, 360-degree camera, blind-spot monitoring with trailer coverage, forward collision warning, auto emergency braking as well as reverse brake assist with cross-traffic alert, and much more.

Ranger Super Duty raises the game for cab chassis buyers with its clever rear driver assistance technology bar. The rear bar packages Ford’s advanced driver assist systems, giving owners the benefits of technologies not previously available on cab-chassis trucks.

“Driver assistance technology was critical to the Ranger Super Duty project,” said Burn. “There was no point developing the most capable version of Ranger yet, if it didn’t have the same driver assist technology as regular Ranger. We want our customers to feel confident that we’ve worked long and hard to ensure Ranger Super Duty delivers the technology they need.”

  • Ranger Super Duty offers 4500kg Gross Vehicle Mass1, 4500kg maximum braked towing, and 8000kg Gross Combined Mass
  • Born from intel received from heavy-duty industry, Ranger Super Duty provides enhanced capability, durability, and productivity
  • Ranger Super Duty development involved learnings from the F-Series Super Duty program
  • MELBOURNE, Australia, April 4, 2025 – The first-ever Ford Ranger Super Duty was revealed today. Uncompromising in its ability to help those who do the toughest jobs carry, tow, and do more, it features Ranger’s Driver Assist Technology, safety features, incredible versatility, and immense capability.

“We are taking global mid-size truck capability to a whole new level, straight from the factory.”

Available in Australia as either a Single, Super or Double Cab Chassis from launch in 2026, Ranger Super Duty will also be available as a Double Cab with style-side box in mid-2026. Ranger Super Duty will be available in two trim levels, Ranger Super Duty and Ranger Super Duty XLT (arriving mid-2026) which is designed for those who need refined long-distance capability. This variant will boast unique alloy wheels and touring-focussed upgrades and will be exclusively available on Double Cab chassis and pick-up variants only.

Redefining the heavy-duty, mid-size pickup segment, Ranger Super Duty will deliver safety, versatility, connectivity, and creature comforts.

From its available Integrated Device Mounting System to its on-board scales, and sealed snorkel, front and rear differential locks, heavy-duty axles, suspension and chassis, the Ford engineering team has developed a new kind of Ranger that’s commercial grade but consumer friendly.

    Tough tests

Developing a truck like Ranger Super Duty and ensuring it could live a life doing the toughest jobs in the most extreme locations required an extensive durability program.

“We torture test our trucks to earn the name Super Duty,” said Baumbick. “For instance, to make sure Ranger Super Duty is ready for almost any work environment, we created an even tougher mud pack test to simulate mine work. Ranger Super Duty had to continue working, even with 600 kilograms of mud stuck to the bottom of the truck.”

Some Ranger Super Duty testing was too tough for humans, with autonomous driving robots being used to run 24/7 tests on Ford Australia’s infamous test track at its You Yangs Proving Ground, Silver Creek, which simulates driving down a rocky dry riverbed.

“Our Silver Creek and autonomous driving robots were designed and developed in North America for the testing and development of the original F-Series Super Duty and have been a part of global Built Ford Tough testing ever since,” said Baumbick.

The truck also ran the usual durability tests, including 24/7 corrosion baths, towing dynos, shaker rig testing, extreme real-world off-roading, and more low-speed, low-range heavy load driving.

    Smarter towing

Being able to tow more than any other factory-built mid-size pickup is just part of Ranger Super Duty’s story.

Starting with a recalibrated integrated trailer brake controller, Ranger Super Duty also gets Ranger’s Pro-Trailer Backup Assist™ that makes backing up as easy as turning a dial. The latest version uses a yaw rate sensor to help automatically manage trailer angle.

“Using a yaw rate sensor to guide Pro-Trailer Backup Assist™ makes for faster setup and running of the system, which we felt was important given Ranger Super Duty is all about work,” said Dave Burn, chief program engineer, Ford Australia. “Able to store up to 10 trailers and only requiring calibration once per trailer, Pro Trailer Backup Assist™ makes manoeuvring heavy trailers much easier.”

Ranger Super Duty debuts Ford’s Smart Hitch and Onboard Scales on a Ranger.

Smart Hitch helps customers better understand the weight on their vehicle’s towball and how to adjust the load in the trailer to ensure optimum load distribution and avoid under or overloading the towball.

Sensors mounted in the suspension on all four wheels means that Ford’s Onboard Scales can help customers estimate their payload as they add items to their vehicle, it also allows for customers to specify additional load for inclusion in payload estimation. Customers can monitor the weight being loaded into the load box via the SYNC screen.

Super Duty’s suit of armour – ready to go further

Ford Ranger Super Duty Traction Green

A 130-litre long-range fuel tank is standard to ensure extended off-road range, while thick steel shielding is designed to protect the tank from damage caused by impact when driving off-road.

Indeed, Ranger Super Duty’s underbelly is armoured with a series of high-strength steel bash plates. Everything from the engine, front differential and transfer case, transmission and fuel tank are shielded.

“With enhanced capability and developed for hard work, we know Ranger Super Duty will be pushed to the limits on some of the toughest terrain on the planet,” said Burn. “That’s why we made sure the underneath had high strength protection.”

Weightlifter – Built to carry more

While its overall chassis dimensions might be the same as the Ranger, the Ranger Super Duty runs a unique frame engineered to provide increased strength, performance, and load carrying capacity. The frame is thicker, while suspension mounts, box mount brackets and tow bar mounts have been reinforced. This allows Ranger Super Duty to achieve its incredible 4500-kilogram GVM rating.1

For enhanced durability, Ranger Super Duty runs stronger front and rear driveshaft while a new heavy-duty rear axle provides enhanced load carrying capacity. The new rear differential is the biggest and strongest to ever be fitted to a production Ranger.

To help spread the load, Ranger Super Duty gets eight-stud wheel hubs with larger bolts.

“These larger, stronger components improve vehicle durability and reliability which is something we know our customers will appreciate.”

    Proven powertrain – heavy-duty ready

Under Ranger Super Duty’s sculpted bonnet is Ford’s 3.0-litre turbo diesel V6 calibrated for heavy-duty emissions standards. Improved cooling ensures optimum temperature management under load and during sustained off-roading in difficult terrain.

“This drivetrain will be delivered with EU6.2 compliance for global markets, meaning Ranger Super Duty is ready to work for years to come,” said Burn.

Ranger Super Duty also offers customers the option of delaying the automatic diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration and then manually initiating the clean at a time that suits.

“While a DPF is part of the emissions management system, being able to delay and then manually initiate a DPF clean will be a useful feature for those customers who operate in a high fire risk environment,” said Burn.

    Extreme terrain capability

Knowing that Ranger Super Duty will be pushed harder than most off-road vehicles and driven in more extreme locations, engineers ensured that the differential, transmission, fuel, and transfer case breathers are all mounted up nice and high. Ranger Super Duty also boasts an improved water wading depth compared to other diesel Ranger variants.

“Extensive testing in controlled and real-world situations proved Ranger Super Duty has the capability needed for all manner of user from emergency services to farmers and recreational off-roaders,” said Burn.

Ranger Super Duty offers six selectable drive modes (Normal, Eco, Tow/Haul, Mud/Ruts, Sand, and Rock Crawl). These modes tailor a range of vehicle settings, from throttle and transmission response to stability control to aid when driving off-road.

Equipped with Ford’s advanced four-wheel drive system, Ranger Super Duty comes with 4A (Automatic 4WD) as the permanent setting to ensure the vehicle always delivers the maximum amount of torque to provide enhanced traction and control on both high and low grip surfaces and under load.

“Ranger Super Duty’s two-speed transfer case features larger, stronger components than other Ranger variants for enhanced durability,” said Burn. “To ensure this truck can handle life in low-range in extreme terrain, the low-range gearset has been upgraded to match the F-Series Super Duty.”

Boasting front and rear locking differentials as standard on all variants, Ranger Super Duty has been set up to perform in the toughest terrain. The front differential is a modified version of the differential in the Bronco Raptor, updated for enhanced load capacity.

“We’ve tested Ranger Super Duty in extreme conditions where a vehicle with open differentials would have become stuck and unable to proceed, but thanks to a locking front and rear differential, an enhanced low-range gearset, and a host of other off-road capability improvements, Ranger Super Duty performed flawlessly,” said Burn.

“The capability of Ranger Super Duty is unmatched in the mid-sized truck segment. It really is the sum of all its parts, and we’re confident that whether your job is extreme or you’re an adventurer who likes to go a long way off the beaten track, Ranger Super Duty will get you there and back again,” said Burn.

Ordering for Ranger Super Duty in Australia and New Zealand opens later this yea,r with arrivals in dealerships expected in 2026. Details about model line-up and on-sale dates for Thailand and other markets through Global Fleet Sales will be confirmed at a later date. More information is available on ford.com.au
